Does your company ship internationally? Do you receive goods from abroad? If the countries concerned are outside the European Union (EU), you will need to complete customs clearance procedures. This may even be the case if you are exporting to or importing from a member country.
Because customs regulations can be difficult to navigate, and customs clearance can be time-consuming, PHM Group can help you. In this article, we explain what customs clearance is and present our offer on the subject.
What is customs clearance?
In goods transportation, customs clearance refers to the procedures by which products are authorized to enter or leave a country. What does it involve? First of all, certain formalities must be completed. You must then declare, among other things, the nature of the goods exported or imported, their value, and the identity of the shipper and consignee. Finally, customs calculates the amount of taxes and duties to be paid.
Bear in mind that you’ll need to complete customs clearance procedures if you’re exporting or importing to or from a country outside the EU. In Europe, this applies to the UK and Switzerland, for example. A customs declaration is also required for export to a member country, to benefit from VAT exemption.
In practical terms, the import procedure generally requires payment of taxes, such as VAT, and customs duties. The exporter, on the other hand, must complete the following formalities:
- Obtain an EORI (Economic Operator Registration and Identification) number to identify yourself
- Supervise the exit of goods at border crossings
- Receive your customs clearance certificate
- Filing an online export declaration with customs
