Wine is a delicate product, sensitive to its environment. You risk deterioration in product quality, and even breakage, if wine is transported under the wrong conditions.
To help you prepare your shipment, we share in this article the best practices to adopt when shipping wine and explain PHM Group’s assets for your wine transport.
What should I look out for when shipping wine?
A successful shipment of cases of wine requires good preparation on the part of the shipper and precautions on delivery.
Packaging
As a shipper, you are responsible for packaging your goods before dispatch. For example, if the bottles break in transit because the cartons are not strong enough, you cannot hold the carrier liable.
We recommend using crates with several layers of cardboard for added strength. Vertical crates are preferable, so that the wine does not touch the cork during transport. If you use horizontal crates, you run the risk of wine spillage in the event of liquid expansion.
To prevent the carrier from arranging the boxes with the cap facing downwards, stick a label with the words “this side up” on it.
Temperature
If you hire a company to transport wine from Bordeaux to Montpellier in August, the weather can be very hot. If this is the case, transport can degrade the quality of the wine. To avoid thermal shock, avoid hot spells.
On the other hand, in very cold weather, the wine can freeze, and you run the risk of the corks coming out of the neck. If frost is forecast, avoid transport.
Storage at destination
On delivery, we advise you to unload your bottles as quickly as possible and place them in a cool, damp place. This time, arrange your crates horizontally so that the liquid touches the cork. This will prevent it from drying out.
